Interview with my mother
(Originally in korean, translated to english)
Me: Hello! I have a few questions to ask about the history of my grandmother and grandfather.
Mother: Yes, what are they?
Me: In what year was my grandmother and grandfather born?
Mother: Your grandmother was born in 1907 and your grandfather was born in 1905
Me: What type of time period did they live in?
Mother: They were living in a time in Korea when many conflicts were going on. Korea was being controlled by the Japanese and World War II took place and Korea got split.
Me: Oh! They must have had a hard time! So can you tell me about what happened when the Korean war was happening?
Mother: North Korea invaded South Korea and South Korea was getting pushed back. The U.S military helped push back North Korea until China joined forces with North Korea. Your grandmother and grandfather escaped from a place called Whang Haedo in North Korea (They got stuck in North Korea after the division) to Seoul in South Korea.
Me: So if they havent have come to Seoul we could have been living in North Korea?
Mother: Possibly.
Me: Who are some important people I should note about?
Mother: The general of the U.S military. His names was Douglas MacArthur. He helped South Korea very much.
Me: Oh ok! Thank you!
Mother: No problem, ask me later if you got any more questions.

Source type
The first photo is a secondary source because it is not a direct picture that my grandfather or grandmother has taken or is included in. The second picture is also a secondary source for it is not directly related with my grandfather or grandmother it is a picture of General Douglas MacArthur was was a turning point in my life. The third picture is related but not direct because it is not a picture of my grandfather or grandmother although they have both experienced it. My interview is also a secondary source because it is not direct information.
Short Explanation of the Source's Significance to the Event
The first picture is very significant because my grandmother and grandfather were fortunate enough to escape North Korea safe and sound. Many people were killed so this this is a turning point because I could have not been here if my grandmother or grandfather did not make it our of North Korea. The second picture is also significant because it is another major turning point because South Korea could have been over run my North Koreans but the U.S military pushed North Korea back. If it was not for General Douglas MacArthur people might have not been able to escape from North Korea. The third picture I think is the most significant because it is the retreat of my grandmother and grandfather. If it wasn't for it My family may have been not existing or living in North Korea. The interview is significant because I would not have been able to know about my grandparents.
Written Recount of the Event
At the time my grandparents were born many conflicts were going around the world. World War II was in play, Korea was overtaken by Japan, Korea was divided, and a war broke out. My grandparents were living in a place called Whang Haedo which is located in North Korea. They were unable to come out after the division. When the war started an event call the January first retreat got him out of North Korea and he came to Seoul. Every move he made was a turning point in my life. Who knows what I could have been.
Family History Reflection
What did you learn from this exercise?
I learned many new things about not only my family history but also history of Korea. I think this project helped me learn a lot of things. I barely knew anything about my family's history and this project has given me the opportunity to learn about it. In the beginning I was worried because I did not know much about the history of Korea and the history of my family. After this project I now know most everything about it. I think we should be thankful for doing this project. I never knew my grandparents went through such harsh situations. I honor my grandparents now more than I ever did.
Has any of your thinking about history changed?
Yes, many things have changed after I learned about my family's history. My grandparents are now much more understandable and honorable. I had no clue about the harsh things they have over come. Also now think that our present is the result of our history. So much of my thinking has changed after this project.
Pick one of the other presentations you saw and discuss your reactions to that content.
I saw Joanne's presentation and It was really interesting because her's was different from all the others because her presentation was about the history of her family religion. She also had many pictures about her family. It was very attention grabbing because the pictures seemed very old.
Roles of Historian
DETECTIVE: As a detective i must find evidence. For evidence I have read many articles and informational sites about the Korean war and have searched up many different pictures to sum up the turning points in my life. You can get these resources online or from books from which you can obtain from libraries.
INTERPRETER: After gathering all the information you must choose what you will prove historically. Being confident and being prepared is important. Getting more points of view will help you. In this point I went further on and interpreted about their choices.
JUDGE: The judge is supposed to choose which point was more valid. I used the skills I had to judge the information and collect vlid information pieces.
PHILOSOPHER: Now you must attach meaning to it historically with all the information you have achieved. Why should I care? This was the reason why I am here. There are so many turning points that has happened that could have changed my life.
